Hi ,
Welcome to volume four of the newsletter. Just a reminder that you can
access the previous three editions by clicking here.
As we enter the final quarter of 2007, I hope you're busy turning your
musical plans into reality. If you're not, then use this newsletter as
your much-needed kick in the pants and get going! In that spirit, I'm
listing a few websites that are worthy of your attention. Each is a
valuable resource for anyone serious about his or her music career.
To begin with, I've recently reconnected with
Michael Laskow, the founder and big boss at Taxi. In order to tell
you more about Michael and what
Taxi has to offer, I've made him my spotlighted artist. By the way, if
you cross paths with Michael in the future, get him to tell you some of
his stories about working in the trenches as an engineer and producer
in the 70's and 80's. It's enough to say he knows where the bodies are
buried!
Next, Benny Carreon, in conjunction with his partner Chris Keaton, has
recently launched a great new website called Music Bovine
which is an extremely useful source for
information about the music industry.
Then there's Greg Sims who is partner in a site called
My Music
Source.com specializing in putting
songwriters and artists in touch with music supervisors. Greg is also a
gifted producer in his own right whose incredibly talented wife,
Annie,
is a recording artist for
Aspirion Records.
Finally, I'd like to thank Glen Caruba and
Pearl Drums
for their sponsorship in the form of the Master Premium Series Drum Kit
sitting happily in the Nashville Studio and Ryan Smith of Shure Microphones for the great mics that surround it.
Enjoy the newsletter and click
here
to drop me a line to fill me in on what
you're up to. I love hearing from you.
Now go get 'em!

| THE DIY GUIDE TO SINGING IN THE
STUDIO
I'm
going to begin this article by quoting from one of my earlier
articles:
Your career as a recording artist
hinges on many things from the songs
you choose to the musicianship on your records. But the single most
important thing for your artist identity is your voice. Your ultimate
goal as a vocalist is to sound exactly like yourself. In other words,
the more relaxed and confident you are as a singer, the more people
will know who you are and what you’re about. In reality, it’s
predominantly musicians who listen to CD’s for the musicianship,
but
the people who decide to buy your CD will connect with your voice first
and everything else much later.

MICHAEL
LASKOW
Since this issue of the newsletter is about musical resources, I've
decided to feature my longtime friend and role model, Michael Laskow.
While Michael isn't necessarily an artist in the strictest sense of the
word, he has worked in the trenches as an engineer and producer with
acts from Eric Clapton to Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. These
days Michael is better known as the founder and head of Taxi, the
independent A&R vehicle.
Michael and I met very shortly after he started Taxi and to say that
the company has come a long way would be a true understatement. What
started as a simple concept has become a very real song pitching and
A&R resource for songwriters and artists in a huge variety of
genres.
